International Council for AIDS Research and Education - i care

i care (International Council for AIDS Research and Education), was created to honor the memory of Anique Jaqueline Kasper. Anique was transfused with HIV infected blood shortly after her premature birth, September 23, 1980, at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She died of AIDS shortly before her 12th birthday on July 1, 1992.

The primary goal of i care is to educate adolescents and teenagers about the causes, consequences and effects of HIV/AIDS. To achieve this a continuing series of commercials will be created to air on network and cable TV channels in the United States, and throughout the world. A world-wide TV special to precede the start of these commercials is under discussion.

The format for the commercials will be patterned after the Emmy award-winning documentary "Scared Straight." It will open with a celebrity/role model/sports figure (Luke Perry / Magic Johnson / Paul Newman / Sharon Stone) explaining the causes and consequences of the disease.

The second segment will be devoted to fund raising. This aspect features the i care pin and its attendant slogan "You don't have to be infected to be affected," which is copyrighted and trademark protected. The pin is a gift for every contribution of $20 or more.

Proceeds will be used to buy air time, and to make financial assistance available to other pediatric AIDS groups and care providers. This, particularly, includes camps for children with HIV/AIDS and their families.

Heading the foundation is Richard Harcourt, the former Executive Director of the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Accountants for i care will be the Santa Monica, CA-based firm of Stonefield Josephson, and the pin is manufactured by Quality Stampings, Inc. of Providence, RI. It is hoped that businesses and corporations will join in this project, and act as sponsors.
